CIMB Group chairman Nazir Razak has spoken out against anonymous blog attacks on his family, saying he will initiate civil and criminal proceedings against those responsible should their identity be ascertained.
In a personal statement today, Nazir said the attacks began soon after he wrote an article about his father, Malaysia’s second prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein, over a year ago and after he commented on controversial self-styled strategic development company 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
The attacks, constituting “lies and slander”, had not spared his two children and this crosses the line, said Nazir.
Notably 1MDB is the brainchild of the current prime minister Najib Abdul Razak, who is Nazir’s brother, and the latter’s statement follows a series of statements by businessman Tong Kooi Ong, who had also been subjected to anonymous blog attacks which Tong claimed was due to The Edge Malaysia’s coverage of 1MDB.
The Edge Malaysia is part of The Edge Media Group, which Tong owns. Last Friday Tong stated he had a trail of evidence to ascertain the identity of the blogger and had served a legal letter to tycoon Jho Low, whom Tong claims is responsible.
However Jho Low had previously denied any links to the attacks.
Nazir’s personal statement is reproduced in full below:
I refer to recent reports on anonymous blog attacks on me, my wife Azlina and our two children. These attacks, constituting lies and slander, have been very hurtful to us as a family. Above all Azlina and I have been extremely concerned and distressed that the attacks featured slanderous accusations against our innocent young children, actions that most parents would agree are ones that cross the boundaries of human decency.
As a matter of record, the blog attacks began soon after I published the article entitled “Remembering My Father, Tun Razak” on 14th January 2014, and after I commented on 1MDB.
For several months now I have been aware that the blog attacks were authored by an anonymous blogger(s) going by the name ‘ahrily90’. However despite continued attempts on my part, I have been unable to take legal and police action against the blogger(s) due to my inability to ascertain their
identity.
I note from Datuk Tong Kooi Ong’s press statement on 6th February that he has a trail of evidence that proves the identity of ‘ahrily90’, the person behind these attacks. If this is indeed the case upon my own review of the evidence, I will certainly initiate civil and criminal proceedings against the person concerned. I will also be investigating any additional recourse available for internet slander against minors.
This possible action is solely and wholly premised on the need to protect my reputation and above all to protect my wife and children from these despicable blog attacks.
Nazir Razak
