The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has met with more than 250 stakeholders to get feedback on the amendment of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998, which will be tabled in Parliament in October.
Chairman Halim Shafie said the meeting process, which began last April, will continue until the end of September.
He said the first phase of meetings in April was with stakeholders and was subsequently extended to audiences with ministries, government agencies, and licensees.
Meetings were then held with non-governmental organisations in May and June, he said in a statement here today.
“The negotiation process with stakeholders was conducted through a series of meetings and workshops with the public and private sector aimed to receive feedback on matters which arose pertaining to the bill,” he said in a statement today.
“The series of meetings were important to ensure the voices and views of stakeholders are not ignored, and all the feedback received will be considered before the amendment is tabled (in Parliament) this October,” he said.
Halim said that in addition to the meeting sessions, the commission also obtained views in relation to the necessary changes to the bill through its website.
Yesterday, Halim said that the amendment should take into account the state of online environment which has changed over the last 17 years, including the emergence of social media.
At the same time, he said, the amendments should also consider the trend that consumers of information from social media are also party to publishing the content.
Halim said the review of the CMA is not only centred on strengthening the enforcement capacity of MCMC, but many other parts of the CMA and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 are also studied.
