The board of Mass Rapid Transit Corporation Sdn Bhd (MRT Corp) has rejected chief executive officer Azhar Abdul Hamid’s resignation until the investigations into the recent accident, which cost three lives, are completed.
In a statement today, MRT Corp said its board decided not to consider Azhar’s resignation at this point on the back of his performance since assuming the post on Sept 1, 2011, which saw the Klang Valley MRT project progressing ahead of schedule at 50% completion at present.
Additionally the board also found the financial management of the project commendable, said MRT Corp, adding that the board has instructed Azhar to remain at the helm of the corporation and lead the investigation.
“The board will only deliberate on Azhar’s resignation once the investigation is completed and the findings of the investigation are made public,” said MRT Corp.
The investigation is expected to complete in September, said the statement.
MRT Corp’s board, chaired by chairman Dr Ali Hamsa, met yesterday and saw full attendance from its members, which included Prasarana managing director Shahril Mokhtar and Secretary General of Treasury Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah.
One week ago Azhar tendered his resignation following an accident at an MRT construction site in Kota Damansara.
The accident, which occurred late evening on Aug 18, saw 14 units of segmented box girders weighing 300 tonnes fall to the ground from its piers, claiming the lives of three workers.
“As the head of MRT Corp, I am taking personal responsibility for the incident and this is the correct thing to do,” said Azhar, former managing director of Sime Darby Plantation, in a press conference on Aug 19.
Pending investigations, all work at that package of the project had been suspended. The subcontractor for the package is Syarikat Muhibbah Perniagaan dan Pembinaan Sdn Bhd.
