Share prices stay mixed at mid-afternoon

Share prices on Bursa Malaysia continued their mixed trend at mid-afternoon as they experienced some pullback after their robust performance in the morning session.

The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI), however, advanced 1.79 points to a new high of 1,789.17 at 3.04 pm.

It had opened 1.23 points higher at 1,788.61.

The previous all-time high was on May 14 when the FBM KLCI closed at 1,788.43.

The market continued to see support from gains in selected heavyweights and lower liners, mainly in oil and gas counters.

HwangDBS Vickers Research said riding on the upward momentum, the key FBM KLCI could rise towards the psychological mark of 1,800 today.

“If so, then the benchmark index -– after chalking up gains of 20.7 points (+1.2%) in the last three days, is poised to overshoot its previous all-time closing high of 1,788.43 ahead,” the research house said.

Meanwhile, major bellwethers on Wall Street climbed between 0.2 %and 0.3% last night following a remark by a policymaker that the United States should continue with its quantitative easing programme to boost growth.

The Finance Index rose 31.791 points to 16,994.81 but the Plantation Index slipped 43.979 points to 8,343.33 and the Industrial Index fell 17.11 points to 3,013.72.

The FBM Emas Index gained 4.26 points to 12,457.50 and the FBMT100 advanced seven points to 12,220.18.

The FBM Mid 70 Index lost 12.61 points to 14,404.22 while the FBM Ace Index shed 37.63 points to 4,808.63.

Losers led gainers 506 to 374, with 253 counters unchanged, 464 untraded and 21 others suspended.

Turnover stood at 1.8 billion shares worth RM1.7 billion.

Among actives, KNM Group gained four sen to 55.5 sen, KNM Group warrants rose 2.5 sen to 15 sen, Ingenuity Consolidated lost half a sen to 12 sen and TH Heavy Engineering was up 5.5 sen to 81 sen.

Of the heavyweights, Maybank slipped two sen to RM10.20, CIMB Group added 13 sen to RM8.63, Axiata improved two sen to RM6.96 but Sime Darby declined one sen to RM9.49.
