Share prices on Bursa Malaysia closed higher on active buying interest of selected heavyweights and lower liners, dealers said.
The barometer index, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI), gained 7.99 points to close at 1,777.15, after opening 3.83 points higher at 1,772.99.
Dealers said the sharp rally in regional markets, due to exuberant consumer sentiment, and the improved economic outlook in the United States improved market sentiment on the local bourse.
However, analysts are expecting profit-taking to set in after the strong market advances last week when the FBM KLCI breached a record high of 1,788.43 points on May 14.
The Finance Index surged 90.59 points to 16,839.60, the Plantation Index rose 70.141 points to 8,299.44 and the Industrial Index gained 13.53 points to 3,037.98.
The FBM Emas Index surged 104.33 points to 12,376.51 and the FBMT100 advanced 85.44 points to 12,139.94.
The FBM Mid 70 Index soared 224.95 points to 14,316.94 while the FBM Ace Index jumped 162.38 points to 4,841.79.
Gainers led losers 845 to 163, with 198 counters unchanged, 393 untraded and 1,599 suspended.
Turnover increased to 2.954 billion shares, worth RM2.817 billion, from 2.114 billion shares, worth RM2.072 billion, recorded on Friday.
Among actives, Luster Industries gained 2.5 sen to 18 sen, Daya Materials and Iris Corporation rose two sen each to 26.5 sen and 22 sen and Naim Indah Corporation increased 1.5 sen to 22 sen.
Heavyweights, Maybank gained six sen to RM10.08, CIMB Group rose 10 sen to RM8.43, Axiata Group added one sen to RM6.92 while Sime Darby Group was two sen lower at RM9.48.
Volume on the Main Market fell to 2.496 billion shares, valued at RM2.719 billion, from last Friday’s 1.707 billion units worth RM2.012 billion.
Turnover on the ACE market increased to 389.87 million shares, worth RM78.23 million, from 361.994 million units, valued at RM52.574 million, recorded last Friday.

Consumer products accounted for 179.2 million shares on the Main Market, industrial products 618.6 million, construction 148.7 million, trade and services 823.1 million, technology 98.3 million, infrastructure 26.3 million, SPAC 89.5 million, finance 79.6 million, hotels 4.3 million, properties 385.3 million, plantations 26.7 million, mining 91,500, REITs 16.5 million and closed/fund 158,200.
