Managing Director Zukri Samat said the bank will open five branches — in Kota Baharu, Sungai Petani, Senawang, KL Sentral and at Jalan Chan Sow Lin in Kuala Lumpur — by the end of this year.

“The construction of one new branch costs RM1 million. We will ensure to recoup the capital investment in 18 months from the date of operations,” he told reporters when met at the Aidilfitri open house of the Eastern Region Bank Islam here today.

Zukri said Bank Islam will also provide 1,000 money boxes to be distributed to selected mosques country-wide to enable Muslims to donate more orderly.

“The money boxes will be distributed to mosques which have an account with the bank. The cost to make a money box is RM150,” he said.

Zukri said the distribution of the money boxes was the first stage to be carried out this year and will be continued next year and in 2015.

“The introduction of the money boxes was made in Kelantan and today Bank Islam donated 200 money boxes,” he added.

At the event, Bank Islam also donated RM500,000 in business tithe to the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council and RM10,000 to Universiti Teknologi Mara Kelantan.
