The new chief to helm the country’s largest bank must be equipped with sound banking knowledge, be experienced in handling large corporations and possess the ability to further regionalise the bank.

Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank)’s outgoing president and chief executive officer Abdul Wahid Omar said his successor should be visionary, courageous and good in stakeholder engagement, to further spur growth of the third largest banking institution in the Asean region.

“The board is currently evaluating numerous candidates, comprising both internal and external candidates. It is not four candidates (as reported by several local media).

“They (the board) would be making an announcement in weeks to come,” he told a press conference after announcing Maybank’s first quarter financial results here today.

Today’s press conference was the last to be chaired by Abdul Wahid in his capacity as Maybank chief.

Abdul Wahid, a 49-year-old Johorean, has been appointed Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of the Economic Planning Unit.

Without divulging names of candidates, Abdul Wahid said he was confident Maybank’s board would make the right choice on who should lead the bank towards realising its 2015 goals.

“The new chief must ensure the continuity of the bank’s trajectory growth, and lead the growth of the banking industry in the country and the Asean region,” he said.

Abdul Wahid thanked the board of directors, management team, investors and media institution for their continued support during his five-year tenure at Maybank.

It is believed that the bank will appoint an internal candidate as the interim chief or as the executive in-charge soon after Abdul Wahid steps down on June 4.

An announcement on the next president and chief executive officer will be made after approval is sought from Bank Negara Malaysia and the Ministry of Finance.
